I bought all the ingredients on my way home to the campo from Cabrera, about 25 minutes away, since the supermercado (grocery store) there would be my only option: cream cheese, whipped cream (in place of cool whip), Oreos, stick of butter, milk, pudding mix, and what I thought was powdered sugar. I wanted to make my family one of my favorite sweet treats, since it would be something new to them and something they'd never make otherwise.
What I had mistaken for powdered sugar, next to the refined sugar, in a clear, unlabeled plastic bag was powdered salt. The biggest mistake I made, though, was not tasting any of the ingredients I added to the mix to prepare the cream filling to layer with crushed Oreos.
The expensive final product was awful. My parents were sitting watching the evening news inside the living room, so I gave a little for them to try. My dad was the first to try it, and the reaction seen on his face told the entire story. It was horrible - and that's when my mom tried it and realized what went wrong; that I added powdered salt instead of powdered sugar. Who knew they even made such a thing?!
They felt so bad for me, but I significantly worse. I was very disappointed, as were they, that I had prepared such an expensive dessert for them that got ruined; I managed to make dirt cake that tasted worse than real dirt. I will make it up to them by making it again, this next time the right way.
