The first visit to the vet got us hopeful … we were prepared for the worst on the follow-up on Thursday, which would have been if he would have told us he suspected epilepsy (and we knew the puppy would never get the treatment he would need to manage that throughout his life). However, the vet did question the seizures, as it is not characteristic of parasitic infections. So, we had our little Shakes stay at the vet for about five and a half hours so that he could be monitored and either confirm or rule out our worry of epilepsy.
We got great news those few hours later - the vet reassured us he didn't see him have any seizures or related episodes. His best guess was that the three seizures he had were a result of the fall he had from a bed and were likely not due to the parasitic infection he had. It also didn't help that he had been so malnourished.
In the end, the vet gave our Shakes another dose of de-parasite medication and intravenous vitamins. Not too long after, his energy had elevated to an almost normal puppy level. He ran around the house and wagged his tail hard enough he could've over-exerted his tail muscles.
Shakespeare was on the road to good health … until tragedy struck. The family member and friend that were supposed to be watching him yesterday had left the house door open, despite the reminder from the doña (woman) of the house, so, inevitably, Shakes ran away. The family noticed he was gone later that night and marched up and down the street looking for him; the next day the Doña alerted the neighbors to be on the lookout, but still no sign of our little puppy.
All we can hope is that our treatment for parasites and vitamins gave him what he needed to recover, and that the formula we fed him was enough to restore his nutrition, and that hopefully another loving family picked him off of the street to provide a home for him. We will never know what happened to Shakes and if he'll have the chance to grow old as a healthy dog - we can only hope.
